We started this blog back in August and I had full intentions of updating it weekly, well 5 months later here is my second post! It has been extremely busy around our house for the past couple of months, we have filled out mountains of paperwork, completed our James 1:27 project, and baked over 75 dozen cookies to raise money for our adoption. We have turned in all our paperwork and now we are waiting for our referral. We told Robin Anne and William about the adoption several months ago and their excitement has been wonderful. William keeps telling us he wants us to bring home two children and there is not a day that goes by that we don’t talk about our precious little one on the other side of the world. They are truly excited about being a big brother and a big sister to a child that does not have a family. This process has been amazing for our family. At times it has been very difficult and discouraging, but we have all learned so much from this experience. One of the very first Bible verses that I ever memorized has been an encouragement to me throughout this journey, Romans 5:3-4 “We can rejoice too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.” Even though this has been difficult at times with fears about our child’s unknown medical needs, financial concerns, and paper work issues, I am so thankful for this experience because through it God is growing my faith and drawing me closer to Him. He is teaching me to trust in him alone and I am so grateful for these things. My precious children are learning and growing through this process as well. We have cut back every household expense and told them that we are saving all our money to bring home our child. My sweet Robin Anne who recently turned 5 got some money for her birthday, she came to me and gave me some and said she wanted to give her money to help bring the baby home. Later that day she came to me and said “Momma, when I gave you that money I wanted to cry,” I asked her why and figured she was going to say because she wanted to spend that money on a new toy or something. But what she said blessed my heart beyond belief, she told me that she wanted to cry because she was so happy to be able to give her money to help bring our baby home. What I can learn from my 5 year old! My little 3 year old William constantly goes through his toys and clothes and picks out things that he wants to give to his new little brother or sister. I love how God is teaching them how to give selflessly. God has been so good to us, we now are 2/3 of the way there financially and all our paperwork has been sent off. It is amazing to see how much God has provided for us thus far. We still have a ways to go but we are trusting that He will continue to provide for our needs. I am so thankful for my amazing friends and family that have worked so hard to help with our fundraising efforts and for their many prayers and sacrificial giving. I am truly blown away by them and cannot stop thanking God for their encouragement. As we excitedly wait for our referral we are continuing to fundraise. We are selling long sleeve adoption t-shirts (the girls shirt is purple and the guys is navy blue) which are the same design just different colors. They are $16 each and come in youth and adult sizes. We are preordering these shirts so if you would like one please let me or PJ know by the end of this week. We will be having a huge rummage sale at Magnolia Baptist Church on February 3rd and 4th. Many kind people have donated tons of stuff so it will be big. Come check it out! Also, we will be selling iced sugar cookies again for Valentine’s Day, so pick some up for your favorite Valentine. Thank you for visiting our site and please continue to pray for our family, I will try not to wait 5 months to update again!

God Bless,

One of the greatest hurdles in adoption is the expense of the process. We understood this hurdle before we entered the process and we also understood the hard work it would take to raise the money necessary. When my wife and I discussed adoption we knew that this was a calling on our lives. The only thing keeping us from adopting a child is the fear of not being able to raise the appropriate funds for the process. We recognized this as an issue of faith. After recognizing this faith issue we were convicted about how our family leads our church through issues of faith yet we were unwilling to step out into that faith. Personally, I began to ask how I could preach about the faithfulness of God and not be willing to live in that faithfulness myself. We knew God’s call on our lives but we were fearful of seeing our savings account dwindle and to know that we had to raise money for the rest of the expenses. We knew what we had in savings and we knew that it would get us through about half of the process. We cut every expense within our home and have been able to cover the expenses to this point. We are to the place where we are going to have to begin raising money for the rest. This is hard for us because we take pride in not asking for anything especially money. But we realize that this pride is just as much a sin as being lazy and asking for everything.

My faith has never been troubled with whether we can love an orphan; my faith has been stretched as God has led us to get others involved in raising money for the process. I take pride in not asking for anything and that pride is what I have had to repent of.

We recognize that people desire to help and that God uses others to move his kingdom forward. We have created a project built around James 1:27. This project will offer help to widows and hope to orphans. The details about the project are on the next two pages and I ask that you read through them. We feel like The James 1:27 Project will be a great way for families to be a part of serving widows and raising money to bring an orphan home. We hope that you and your family or church will pray about your involvement in The James 1:27 Project. Please share this packet with anyone and everyone as we are looking for those who will commit to the project. We know that God will provide but we also know that he calls us to work, plan, and prepare. We want to be right in the middle of where the natural and the supernatural collide for the glory of God.

Please read the material from the links below and let us know if you desire to be on The James 1:27 Project Team. The family gathering and envelope stuffing party will be Thursday evening Oct. 6 at 6:00pm. We need to know if you are interested by no later than Monday Oct. 3. You can let us know by either calling us or at 601-344-8777 or emailing us at weeks.pj@gmail.com. There is also information on the website at www.anadoptionjourney.com. If you cannot be involved you can help by spreading the word to others. Thanks in advance for your prayers and participation.

Updates:

We are finishing up our home study and Annie has filled out what seems like hundreds of documents for the adoption. The home study was not bad but it was very thorough. These people know more about me than my family and for good reason. There are some crazy people out there who wish to harm children and they could easily use adoption to do so. Along with the paperwork we have been focusing on fund raising. We have what I believe some of the coolest adoption t-shirts anywhere and they are great quality. All the proceeds from the t-shirts go directly to the Weeks Adoption Fund set up at Regions Bank. Many people ask how they can help and the best way is to spread the word about the t-shirts. In the coming months my wife will be baking cookies and cakes to sell for holidays and special events. If you have ever had any of Annie’s treats then I do not need to tell you how great they are. We will be sharing more on that in the coming weeks. Please continue to pray for us as continue this process. Some specific things that you can pray for are:

- Encouragement through the process

- Patience while waiting for paperwork to come back

- Pray for the child that has just been born and will one day live with us

- Pray for the mother who just had to give her child up for adoption

- Pray for our two children as they are excited and filled with wonder

- God’s gracious provision as we raise funds

Theology:

With each new post I will attempt to explain some of what the Bible teaches about adoption and how it relates to every believer. Please know that I am not an expert on orphan care but I am doing some study on what the Bible teaches us about adoption. Let me start by saying that one of the greatest resources I have come across is the book Orphanology by Tony Merida and Rick Morton. Tony was the pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Hattiesburg, MS and Rick is the discipleship pastor at Temple. Tony has since moved to Raleigh, NC where is a professor at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and is planting Imago Dei Church. For anyone wanting to investigate what the Bible teaches about orphan care and our adoption as children of God should read Orphanology.

Each week I will attempt to provide some insight into what the Bible teaches about the connection between our lives as believers and the adoption of a child. The word I will describe in this post is hope. The core of the Gospel is hope. The Bible describes our nature before Christ as dead. (Eph. 2:1-2) Whether we realize it or not we live in a hopeless world apart from the grace of God. We cannot work hard enough or make enough money to earn favor with God. We search for peace and we strive to find purpose to no avail. We may recognize the emptiness but we do not know what to do about it. Yet when we were dead in our sin Christ made us alive. (Eph. 2:5) Christ lived the life we cannot live and he died the death we should have died. He came to give us life and hope. Because of the sinless life, brutal death, death defeating resurrection, and ascension of Christ we can experience hope. When we come to faith in Christ we who were hopeless now are given a new family, new identity, new life, and an inheritance. (1 Peter 1:3-4)

When we adopt a child we are putting the hope of Christ on display. I am in no way saying that we are offering the same kind of hope that Christ offers us through salvation. I am saying that when we adopt a child it gives them hope in this world and it displays the hope of Christ to the world. What we desire to offer a child is a new family, a new identity, and a new life. We are adopting a child from Russia. There are 750,000 orphans in Russia most of which will not be adopted. The statistics show that 80% of orphans who are not adopted will end up in crime, prostitution, homeless, or commit suicide. The picture for these orphans is hopeless. Through our adoption process we desire to give a child hope in this world as well as hope for eternity. We desire to raise a child with the love of a family and with the love of the Father. We are imperfect people offering hope through a perfect God.

Thank you for the taking the time to check out our site, I am not a writer by any means but I will try to blog throughout our adoption journey. Even before we were married we had talked about adopting a child one day, but it was something that we never really seriously discussed, it was just a thought in the back of our minds. After God had blessed us with two amazing biological children, we began to think about having a third. This is when God began to work in our hearts about adoption and after praying about it for several months we decided to look into the process. I started doing research and reading countless stories of people who had adopted children internationally and knew that this was something God was leading our family to do. I remember driving in the car one day and praying “God is this really the right thing to do?” and immediately He responded with how could it be wrong? PJ and I both felt that adoption was what God had planned for us. We decided that a child younger than William, who is now 2, would be the best fit for our family. We looked into adoption in the United States and quickly learned that there were many families waiting to adopt infants that were born in our country. Then we started looking into international adoption, since we have been personally involved in mission work to Moldova we thought that would be a great place to start, after making several phone calls we learned that Moldova was currently not allowing adoptions to the US. We then started looking into similar European countries, I have an aunt that adopted a precious girl from Russia a few years ago and so we decided to look more closely into Russia. We discovered that Russia has over 750,000 orphans living in various orphanages throughout the country and of these children only 1 in 100 will be adopted. Unlike foster care where there is somewhat of a family structure, children who are in orphanages usually have attachment issues and experience developmental delays as well as other issues that come from being institutionalized. There are simply not enough workers to spend adequate time with each of these children. If these children are not adopted by the time they leave the orphanage at age 18, statistics show that 80% of them will end up in crime, prostitution, commit suicide, or live homeless. This broke our hearts and led us to the decision to adopt from Russia. We are truly excited about the journey that God is leading us through and ask that you please remember us in your prayers. Being a mother is such an honor and a privilege and I cherish the time that I have with my precious children. They are such a God given gift and I am so excited about the opportunity to welcome another child into our family.

Welcome to An Adoption Journey, a site dedicated to documenting the adoption process of the Weeks family. We are very excited about the opportunity that we have to be a part of the adoption process and welcome you to walk through it with us. We know God has led us to this decision to adopt and we look forward to experiencing his provision in real tangible ways. We also know that we cannot walk through this journey alone. We covet your prayers and support through this journey and we want to hear from you along the way. The process of adoption is long and arduous but we are up for the task. My wife is one of the most unbelievable people I have ever known and her strength is contagious. She has spent hours upon hours in research and on the phone talking with agencies about the process of adoption. We will do our best to write posts often and explain things such as where we are in the process, prayer requests, ways for you to help, and some thoughts on what the Bible teaches about adoption. We look forward to sharing this journey with you and look forward to hearing from you soon.
